(Oct 16, 2014) Herford - Hannover - Berlin [ドイツ・オーストリア鉄道旅行 2014]

After breakfast, my friend brought me to Herford station.by car. I took the train IC 2443 at 09:29. IC 2443 from Köln Hbf to Leipzig Hbf was hauled by 101 145, the last produced locomotive of class 101. Since the train was not crowded, I occupied one of the first class compartments by myself. Though the coach was old, the seat was very convenient. DB plans to replace old IC coaches by ICx or double-deck coaches with TRAXX locomotives. Certainly, modern vehicles are convenient, but the old IC coaches are also very attractive. After a short stop at Bad Oeynhausen, I saw the monument of Kaiser Wilhelm I on the left side near Porta Westfalica. Passing Minden which has DB technical research institute, the train entered into Land Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). IC 2443 arrived at Hannover Hbf at 10:23 with two-minute delay.

I had planned to take ICE 948 to go to Berlin. Surprisingly, ICE 948 was cancelled due to a technical problem. Nevertheless, IC 2222 from Aachen Hbf to Berlin Ostbahnhof were still waiting at platform 9, which should have departed at 10:18.

After coupling with IC 2388 from Frankfurt am Main Hbf, the train left Hannover Hbf at 11:01 with over forty-minute delay. In the yard near Hannover, I saw the locomotive 115 114, which was 57 years old and the oldest electric locomotive of Deutsche Bahn. Calling at Wolfsburg Hbf, the train ran at the maximum speed of 200 kph over the high-speed railway for about an hour. IC 2222/2388 stopped at Berlin Spandau, and then ran over the Stadtbahn (City railway) to the central area of German capital. Running along with S-Bahn trains, the train arrived at Berlin Hbf at 12:45, about forty-minute delay from the scheduled time.

After checking in a hotel near Berlin Hbf, I went to the Wall museum in Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate and Pergamon Museum. Among them, Wall museum was very impressing since it showed the tragic and complicated history of this city.

Then, I reached Alexander’s platz where was downtown of former eastern Berlin. I visited a big shopping center and ate Currywurst, which was said to be originated in Berlin. Then I went to “Loxx” which had a massive model railway layout of Berlin.

Coming back to the hotel once, I took RB 18581 at 19:30 from the underground platform of Berlin Hbf. It took only two minutes to Potzdamer Platz, a new downtown. I passed by "Bahn Tower", the headquarter of Deutsche Bahn, and reached to Philharmoniker. I listened to piano concerto no.by Mozart, and “Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zarathustra)” by Richard Strauss played by Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Emanuel Ax (piano) and Andris Nelsons (Conductor). The beautiful and skillful music was very moving. I came back to Berlin Hbf by RE again, bought sandwiches for dinner and got back to the hotel.

The sheet of IC is beautiful newly.
However, the train gives off a peculiar smell.
Currywurst to have hung spicy ketchup for the person in Berlin is one above merely fast food.
It is very good. Then, the beer is better.

Dear Masato-san,
I appreciate your comment. Please write your comment in Japanese. I wrote this article in English only to be familiar with English.
Although the seats of IC coaches were recently replaced by modern ones same as ICE, I prefer old seats.
I agree that currywurst with beer satisfy my stomach happily.
Best regards.
